Plans and Planning

Self-assess your needs & strengths online

This page offers a form to help you to clarify your current goals, needs, concerns or challenges. You may send your responses to one of our mentors for our suggestions of support and development. (View our Privacy Policy.)

Use the form in one (or both) of two ways:

  1. Add your details and select the mentor to whom you would like it sent. Tick the relevant boxes, enter your comments then submit them by clicking on Send Form.
  2. Click here for a printer-friendly version of the form. Print and complete it on paper for your own record or or to email to Tom Watkins.

NB: Our approach to planning and managing plans is central to all that we do. It is the foundation of our work to help improve project, group or team performance, organisational or personal development. Consequently, there are elements of planning represented within each of our other topics and you may find it useful to visit the self-assessment tools within them: Self Management, Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, Decision Making, Leadership.

First, tick the items which best describe your needs, concerns, goals or challenges:

It is sometimes difficult to hold the focus on what is important.
It's difficult to get people's commitment to important plans.
We are too busy to plan well.
Some people prefer not to be involved in our planning processes, even when they know the outcomes will affect them.
We seem to be doing too much, poorly. I'd rather we did less, much better.
There is so much going on that it's hard to hold it all together.
I want simplicity but I get complexity.
Our direction or plans keep changing.
I'm not sure how the plans we make fit within the Bigger Picture.
We have a strategic plan but it's rarely or never referred to.
We don't seem to have a strategic plan.
We don't to plan things very well at all.
We seem to "make it up as we go along".
We repeat too many of our mistakes.
We often make plans but nothing much seems to eventuate from them.
We make plans and people say they'll carry out commitments but they don't.
We make plans which affect others, without their input.
We fail to communicate plans to those who need to know.
Attempts to deal with important things become unproductive arguments or messily democratic indecisiveness.
Plans we make end up unsupported and fail.
At times we all seem to be going in different directions.
We need clearer reference-points for direction-setting.
We need clearer reference-points for taking stock of our progress.
People make unsafe assumptions that plans made have others' support.
I have issues around being overly formal or overt about management processes.
We seem to manage in favour of crises, rather than strategy which avoids them.
